According to island author Bob Jonas, “Death Brew” is a concoction he never intended to create. The sequel to his previous young adult novel, “Imposter,” set in the Middle East, “Death Brew” takes place in the German town of Erlengen. Jonas will read from his new novel at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Vashon Bookshop.
The sequel came about when Jonas, a longtime school librarian who has worked in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Santiago and Saudi Arabia, read “Imposter” to a group of former students in Erlengen.
“They demanded a sequel,” Jonas said. “So, I used the development of the book as a teaching tool. They had to come up with ideas. Erlengen was the first German town to sign on to the Nazi party’s National Socialist agenda. It’s not that well known, but it became part of the book.”
The antics of his main character, Zane Walker, in Saudi Arabia catch up with him in Germany, where his former Saudi media personality becomes a hero to neo-Nazi groups, and Walker has to summon his courage to extricate himself from a seemingly impossible situation.
