Jam in The Atrium, a virtuoso pianist performance and more.

Jam in the Atrium

Master drummer, composer, music director, organizer, recording artist, and record producer Matt Jorgensen will be the featured guest artist at the next Jam In The Atrium, from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

“Matt is one of the most prolific and in-demand drummers in the Northwest, ranking high among the new breed of young musicians who are shepherding jazz into the next millennium,” said bassist and Jam in the Atrium host, Brue Phares. “His work reflects a deep immersion in the jazz tradition.”

Jorgensen has picked up-and-coming Northwest guitarist, Martin Budd, to join him and Phares for the jam on Saturday.

Budd co-founded the Seattle/New York-based contemporary jazz group, Meridian Odyssey, whose first release, “Second Wave,” was voted as one of the top 15 Seattle records of 2020 by The Seattle Times; and whose second full-length album, “Earthshine,” was awarded the 2022 Golden Ear Award by Earshot Jazz.

Jazz in the Atrium is free to the public.

Pianist Cole Anderson

A virtuoso performance of piano works by French, German and American composers, augmented with scholarly observations by the noted pianist, Cole Anderson, is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

Anderson’s concert will span three centuries of musical experience — classical and baroque, impressionist and 20th-century jazz, with works by Fanny Mendelssohn, George and Ira Gershwin, and Maurice Ravel.

Art History Talk

Art historian Rebecca Albiani will present a lecture on renowned American artist Jacob Lawrence, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

This Seattle painter grew up in Depression-era Harlem. While many of his works criticize injustice and prejudice, his art also celebrates the Black experience.

This talk coincides with the Jacob Lawrence exhibition, “Jacob Lawrence: American Storyteller,” on view at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) through Jan. 5, 2025.

The exhibition brings together works by Lawrence from SAM’s and local collections in a series of case studies that survey the essential themes — family, community, history, and human rights — that inform the artist’s works.

Vashon Opera

Vashon Opera’s production of Guiseppe Verdi’s “Otello” is set for performances on Friday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 22, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The production boasts world-class opera singers, including tenor Erinn Brooks in the title role. Brooks is a regular at the Metropolitan Opera.

Art Bazaar

Vashon Center for the Arts invites Vashon artists to offer their art for sale in the Vashon Art Bazaar, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29, at the Blue Heron Education Center.

Registration is open at bit.ly/ArtBazaar2024, and closes at midnight on Sept. 10. The sale provides artists an opportunity to clear out their studio or storage and find new homes for their work. It also makes art more accessible to new and/or emerging collectors at different price points. All art will be priced at a 30-50% discount (or more) of value.

VCA’s standard commission split applies, where artists receive 60% of the final sale price.

Eligible works include original artwork by the artist, whether shown before or not. In addition, VCA is accepting a limited amount of art that may have a very slight defect or “seconds,” art studies, etc. Work does not need to be framed. However, unframed work should be in sleeves for protection. Art drop-off is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.
