Local heroes play Luna
Turner Down, a group that has a longtime following on Vashon, will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Café Luna. The group features Luke McQuillin and Doug Ringer on guitars, Jack Barbash on keyboards and Fletcher Andrews on percussion.
“With dueling guitar and piano lines and rock solid rhythms, you can’t help but get caught up in the music of Turner Down,” McQuillin said.
The group creates instrumentally driven, rock-flavored jazz, fusion and blues with a spattering of vocal catenations, making music in what McQuillin described as “a hodgepodge of musical styles synthesized in the moment.”
Another well-known Island musician, Chuck Roehm, will play a free evening of original songs at 7:30 p.m Saturday, Sept. 19, at Café Luna. Roehm’s upbeat music, described as “cosmic folk,” combines an appreciation of nature with a metaphysical view of life.
Roehm, who has played at many Island venues over the years, was a member of the well-known Island group, The Garage Boys, and is a member of the popular Island band RiverBend.
He has also performed for audiences in Los Angeles, Chicago, Kona and Victoria.
Rocky Horror night
Vashon Film Society and Vashon Theatre will present “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Admission is $7. This cult film classic, a musical science-fiction horror movie parody, always inspires audience participation, organizers said.
Hans York comes to Vashon
Hans York, an acclaimed singer, songwriter, guitarist and entertainer, will have a show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Land Trust Building on Bank Road.
Tickets to the show are on sale at Vashon Bookshop and cost $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

Bike has a dance beat
The hillbilly jam-grass band Deadwood Revival will bring its foot-stomping sounds to the Red Bicycle Bistro at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.
Concert organizer Pete Welch said the band is renowned for its “banjo picking, harmony singing, spirit lifting new roots music.” The show is free and is for ages 21 and older only.
The Bike’s lineup this weekend also includes a free show by the reggae band Kore Ionz at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19.
Jump Track, a local band featuring Chuck vanNorman on guitars and vocals, Geoff Johns on percussion and Jason Everett on bass, will wrap up the weekend with a free, all-ages show at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.
UMO opens a school
Vashon’s UMO Ensemble will open the UMO School of Physical Arts this fall, with classes for kids set to take place at the Open Space for Arts and Community.
The classes will take students on a journey that includes tumbling, object manipulation (juggling), trampoline, tightrope and aerial for the older students.
Teachers include Kajsa Ingemansson, Esther Edelman, Martha Enson and Janet McAlpin.
The first round of classes — a six-week session for ages 4 to 12 — will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Oct. 1.
A second round of classes will include mask, dramatic acrobatics and ensemble theater intensives, taught by Mik Kuhlman and Amy Rider.
Classes cost $80 to $90 per session.

Drama Dock auditions
Auditions for Drama Dock’s production of “Inspecting Carol” will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 23, in the McMurray Middle School band room. Callbacks are scheduled for Sept. 24.
The play, a holiday farce, will open at the Blue Heron theater on Dec. 17.
There are roles for five women ages 20 to 60 years and older, and six men ages 20 to 60 years and older.
There are also specific requirements for an African-American man and one teen or young adult male, as well as one “large” 11 year-old boy. Scripts for the show are available at the Vashon library.
