Brian Brenno art, Lúnasa, and another Lance Morgan birthday bash

Brian Brenno at Windermere

An exhibition of Brian Brenno’s Vashon-centric works of art, made from cut up pop and beer cans nailed to plywood, will be on view at Windermere Vashon’s gallery throughout March and April.

Known widely for his work as a glass artist, Brenno is steeped in the history, sights and sounds of Vashon — he is a fourth-generation islander. In his works on view at Windermere, he depicts iconic island images — ferry traffic, Vashon’s views of Mt. Rainier and the Olympics, quaint scenes of Burton and Quartermaster Harbor, the porch at Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie, and more.

Windermere Vashon, located at 17429 Vashon Hwy SW, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.

Birthday bash

Longtime local educator and musician Lance Morgan will celebrate his 65th birthday with a free show at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Vashon Eagles Club, at 18134 Vashon Hwy SW. Morgan, joined by Scotty Hayes, Emory Miedema-Boyajian, Michael Marcus and Rhiannon Walther, will front the band Monsters Under the Bed in an evening of 1980s dance music.

Author talks

Vashon Library will feature two author events on Saturday, March 22, with no advance registration required to attend.

At 11 a.m., meet Bill Jarcho, who will read from his new kids’ book, “Come on Down and Pet the Fish!” All ages are welcome with an adult, and Jarcho will sign and sell copies of his book. (See article, page 8.)

At 4 p.m., Patrick Hutchinson, author of “Cabin: Off the Grid Adventures with a Clueless Craftsman” — a memoir that received a rave review in The New York Times — will give a talk about his book as well as sell and sign copies. The book can also be ordered from Vashon Bookshop.

Opera talk

Join Vashon Opera’s Maestro Jim Brown and Artistic Director Allison Pohl, as well as a host of volunteer leaders, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, at Vashon Library, to learn about the company’s upcoming performances of “Falstaff” on May 23 and 25 at Vashon Center for the Arts. There will be an opera preview and discussion of the plot and the music, as well as a chance to meet interesting opera fans and devotees.

Lúnasa

Lúnasa, a group that Folk Roots magazine has called “an Irish music dream team,” will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Vashon Center for the Arts. The band’s complex arrangements and sound has reshaped the boundaries of traditional Irish music and energized audiences the world over. The Irish Echo described the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet,” and MOJO magazine defined the players as “the new gods of Irish music.”

Visit vashoncenterforthearts.org for tickets.

Open House

Swing by and explore Vashon Center for the Arts between 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, March 23.

The free, all-ages event will feature tours backstage, up and over the catwalk and down into the orchestra pit of VCA’s Kay White Hall. Guests can also explore the Blue Heron Education Center and learn more about the artistic opportunities offered in that space. Games and challenges, complete with prizes, will include a riddle contest and a brand new scavenger hunt.

Vashon Maury Chamber Orchestra will present a program, “Spring Idyll,” at 2 p.m. in VCA’s Atrium, where refreshments will also be provided.

The program will include Rossini’s String Sonata #1 in G, the Scherzo from Janáček’s “Idyll,” J.S. Bach’s “Badinerie,” the finale from Dvořák‘s American string quartet, and more. The orchestra’s cello and string bass quartet will get you up and dancing — or at least tapping your toes — to two tangos.

Musical Director Danielle McCutcheon will also perform lively violin solos: a Hungarian dance by Louis Sauter, and a theme and variation from the “The Birthday Song,” by Rachel Barton Pine. The program will end with “O Burrico de Pau,” by C. Gomes.

Asiya Korepanova

Virtuoso pianist, transcriber, composer, visual artist and poet Asiya Korepanova will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Her program will include her own composition as well as works by Beethoven, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, and Mussorgsky. Find out more and get tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Pete Droge

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Pete Droge will perform an intimate concert with his partner in music and life, Elaine Summers, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

In addition to fan favorites, Droge will premiere songs from his forthcoming album, “Fade Away Blue,” which was produced by Grammy-winner Paul Bryan, and will be released on Puzzle Tree Records later this year.

Visit vashoncenterforthearts.org to check ticket availability.

Art Talk

Join art historian Rebecca Albiani for an art talk at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Albiani will explore the work of Frida Kahlo, who has become an internationally known feminist icon. Kahlo took up painting after a devastating streetcar accident and wed Diego Rivera a few years later. She adopted a flamboyant persona, slugging tequila and taking lovers of both sexes, while using art as a way of combating her physical and emotional pain.

Workshop

Join Eva Papp, founder of the Active Authenticity path to well-being, for a full day workshop, “Relationshp Boundaries and the Strategies That Make Them Work,” from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at Open Space for Arts & Community.
