Honk! if you can paint

Drama Dock is gearing up to present “HONK!” — a musical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s story of the ugly duckling — with performances slated for April 10 through 26.

Audiences can look forward to seeing a rumba on roller skates, tango-ing cats, high kicks and frog flippers, but in the meantime, Drama Dock is looking for a few good people to help paint the show’s set. To volunteer, e-mail randymarinez@comcast.net.

Photo art sought

POV (Photographers of Vashon) is seeking fine art photographs for “Inner Vashon, An Outer View,” an exhibition that will open in July at the Blue Heron Arts Center.

Entry is open to amateur photographers as well as professionals, but all submitters must have a physical presence or working relationship with Vashon. For information about how to enter, visit photographersofvashon.org.

Soul on the silver screen

A film celebration of soul music from the 1960s will come to Vashon Theatre at 9 p.m. Friday, March 20. The evening will include rare performance footage of James Brown, Lee Dorsey, Etta James, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Ike and Tina Turner and others. Tickets are $5.

‘Fame’ time

Vashon High School’s production of “Fame, the Musical,” opens this weekend, with performances scheduled March 13 to 29.

Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. Ticket prices vary from $8 to $12, depending on performance dates, and can be purchased at Books by the Way, the VHS office and the door.

The musical tells the story of a group of students at New York High School of the Performing Arts. More than 50 students have contributed their talents as actors, technicians, designers, directors’ assistants and musicians.

The student orchestra features electric guitars, drums, horns and a flute, and the music has a lively 80s pop/rock sound. Some material may not be suitable for children younger than 13.
