Mary Poppins, Mariee Siou, Poetry reading, Troll talk, Garden Tour, and more.

Mary Poppins

A supercalifragilistic cast of Vashon Dance Academy dancers will take the stage this weekend to perform “Mary Poppins” — the 27th annual production under the leadership of the company’s artistic director, Cheryl Krown.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Vashon High School Theater.

Dancers from preschool through high school will bring the tale to life, with Kate Spranger and Calliope deSmet in alternating portrayals of the high-flying nanny. Bert will be danced by Junior Gerrit van Roekel. And it wouldn’t be a Vashon Dance Academy production without the tradition of “dancing dads” joining the cast in a variety of comic roles.

Get tickets at the Burton Coffee Stand or via the Venmo account @dance-vashon.

Dance for all

New Nomandic Dance classes are coming up for both partner and solo dancers. A Lead and Follow class will start a new series on June 25, and Cabaret Choreography will return for solo dancers from June 26 to July 9. Find out more at nomadicdance.com.

Nomadic Dance also holds a monthly dance party on the last Saturday of the month at Snapdragon. The next party will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 29, with a $10 suggested donation.

Mariee Siou

Singer and songwriter Mariee Siou will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

Siou has been a fixture in the neo-folk scene since her 2007 debut, “Faces in the Rocks,” now acclaimed as a cult classic in the indie music world. She is known for her delicate finger-picking and poetic mysticism and has been lauded for conveying healing through her music.

She has toured widely, opening for artists including Mazzy Star, Buffy St. Marie, Bert Jansch, Brightblack Morning Light, and Joanna Newsom. In 2021, she played at the international music festival, Le Guess Who? in Utrecht, Netherlands, at the invitation of Phil Elverum of The Microphones.

Poetry reading

A Summer Solstice poetry reading, at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, will take place outdoors at the labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, at 15420 Vashon Highway. Vashon Poet Laureate Margaret Rancone suggests bringing poems about spirituality, seeking, finding, and loss.

Troll talk

Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams, longtime islander and Emerita Professor of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington Seattle, will speak on the topic of “Trolls in our Imagination: Scary, Clumsy, Lovable,” at 12 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

Gavel Adams grew up with trolls, in the forest around her Swedish family’s summer cabin, and in the books she read as a child. But it was not until she designed a course in Scandinavian Children’s Literature and Culture at the University of Washington — some 30 years ago — that she truly began to explore and document the history of the trolls. Her talk will take listeners on a journey into the world of the trolls in literature, film, and art from around the mid-1800s to the present.

Get tickets (free for those 18 and younger) at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

Garden Tour

Vashon Center for the Arts’ annual Garden Tour will bloom on June 22 and 23, with tours of six exquisite local gardens, a stunning exhibition of garden-themed art in VCA’s Koch Gallery, food and garden vendors, a raffle, and more. Find out more and get tickets at vashongardentour.org.

Lisa Loeb

Lisa Loeb, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, radio host, actor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, has two upcoming concerts on Monday, June 24, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The first concert, at 2 p.m., will be a children’s concert, to be followed by a 7:30 p.m. evening show.

Loeb started her trailblazing career with the platinum-selling song “Stay (I Missed You),” and was the first pop musician to have a number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. She followed that with several hit singles and six albums, two of which were certified gold. She is also well known for her five children’s albums and two illustrated children’s books with music.

Cosmic Charlie

Cosmic Charlie, a Grateful Dead cover band from Athens, Georgia, will play a show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

Over the past 25 years, the band has earned a reputation as a band that puts a distinctive and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalog — tapping into the Dead’s energy and style as a foundation on which to build.

David Gans, of the acclaimed Grateful Dead Hour, describes Cosmic Charlie as “…a great band — these guys do this music the way it should be done: having the conversation in their own voices.”

Doors open at 6:30 on July 6 for the 7:30 show. General admission tickets are $25 and $30 at the door. Youths 18 and younger are free. Find out more and get tickets at openspacevashon.org.
