Get ready for Garden Tour
What has six gardens, art al fresco, live music, a sunset gala, demonstrations and even an auction of artful mailboxes?
That’s right — it’s Vashon Allied Arts 2009 Garden Tour.
A diverse array of tour events are slated for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 26 to 28, beginning with a talk and tour, “Who’s Who in the Garden,” 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 26.
Attendees can stroll through two sunny landscaped gardens, learn garden history and dig into stories behind the names of varietal plants. Lavender scones and tea will be served, and an informative slide show will be presented. Printed materials about plants will also be available. Admission is limited to 40 people.
Admission to “Who’s Who in the Garden” is $45 or $60, which includes a weekend Garden Tour ticket.

Calling audiences and kids for Vashon Opera
Tickets are now on sale for Vashon Opera’s inaugural seaon, which will include Puccini’s “La Bohème,” a children’s performance of “Little Red Riding Hood” and Aaron Copland’s “The Tender Land.”
“La Bohème” will be staged Sept. 18 and 20, at Vashon High School; “Little Red Riding Hood” will be performed for free on Feb. 6, 2010, at Ober Park; “The Tender Land” will be performed May 14 and 16, 2010, at Bethel Church.
Season tickets are $40 ($36 for seniors and students) and can be purchased at www.vashonopera.org. Single tickets for “La Bohème” and “The Tender Land” ($20, $18 for seniors and students) will be available starting in July on the Web site, at Books by the Way, or by calling Jennifer Krikawa at (206) 388-2926.
The opera is also looking for children ages 5 to 16 to sing the children’s chorus of “La Bohème.”

Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27, and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Bethel Church.
Mondays are for dancing at the Village Green
Vashon Folkdancers and Vashon Park District have planned a lineup of summer concerts that combine music by acclaimed world music groups and community folk dancing.
The first concert, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 22, will feature Pangeo, playing traditional dance music of Greece. At 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 29, Correo Aereo will play traditional music of Latin America. Red Stick Ramblers, a Cajun dance band, will play a concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 6. All three concerts are free and will take place at the Village Green.
Church of Great Rain seeks stories about Island life
The Church of Great Rain, the monthly variety show that is performed at Red Bicycle Bistro on the last Sunday of every month, is looking for true stories from Islanders about their lives and times on Vashon.
The church cast will select some stories for presentation in the show.
Stories should take three to seven minutes to read out loud, be true and have have some connection to Vashon Island. Send stories to performance.exchange@comcast.net.
Café Luna offers film and wine nights
“Occupation 101,” a 2006 documentary film about Israeli-Palestinian relations, will screen at Café Luna at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11.
Subtitled “Voice of the Silenced Majority,” the film was made by Libyan-born brothers Abdallah and Sufyan Meish.
A discussion will follow the 90-minute screening.
The film does not necessarily reflect the opinions of Café Luna, according to the organizers.
Luna’s wine tasting series continues from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 12, with tastes of five wines from around the world offered for $8.
Art Chippendale, who manages Viticulture, an Island vineyard, and who works occasionally at Vashon Winery, will be the evening’s resident expert.
A night of Butoh
“Home — The Undeciphered World,” a multimedia performance inspired by Butoh dance movement, will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, at the Chinese House on the David Smith property.
