Arts briefs: Jan. 14

Music at Luna

Café Luna will offer three free music events this weekend, kicking off with a concert by Angela Reed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.

Reed has earned accolades from critics and musicians, including Judy Collins, who said the Seattle-based singer/songwriter “has the voice of an earth angel — sweet and vibrant and memorable.”

Part of Fortune, a folk duo from Olympia, will play at Luna at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17.

The duo is comprised of Neal Woodall and Lisa Marie Kuhlman, who have traveled the world together to play what they describe as “music to nourish the soul.” Their repertoire includes originals as well as covers, and families are encouraged to attend.

Celtic players and knitters will fill the café at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18.

An event that takes place every third Sunday of the month, dozens of musicians show up to play jigs, reels and polkas from memory. Beginners are welcome — staying with the beat is the only requirement.

Knitters are also invited to work on their projects while the Celtic players make their merry music. For more information about the knitting, contact David Guion at 463-1680.

‘Little Women’

“Little Women,” the musical, will be performed at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 16, 17, 23 and 24, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at Bethel Church, 14735 Bethel Lane S.W. Tickets cost $10/$8, and are available at Vashon Bookshop, Vashon Island Music, Books by the Way and at the door.

Botanical monotype workshop

Island artist Mary Margaret Briggs is offering a weekend workshop Jan. 24 and 25 in her Vashon studio creating collages composed of botanical monotypes.

Participants will select plants from Briggs’ garden, experiment with ink colors and print on day one; on day two, they’ll create a collage using monotypes made the day prior. Beginners are welcome. Costs are $175 for the workshop and $25 for materials. Further details can be found at www.briggs.typepad.com/workshop or call Briggs at 567-5568.

Audition for ‘Swan Lake’

Vashon Junior Civic Ballet will perform Tchaikovsky’s famed “Swan Lake” ballet in May, and there’s plenty of room for dancers.

Auditions for the ballet will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Ober Park performance room. There are parts for dancers 3 and older. No experience is necessary.

8-word poetry open mic

A monthly gathering of folks who love to share poetry will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Café Luna. Bring something of your own or that someone else has written. Or relax and enjoy. Or write a poem using the following eight words: ice, slide, plow, marooned, power, skid, snowflake, chains. Poets of all ages are welcome, and the kids always go first.
