Gruesome Playground Injuries, Contra dance and Tim Couldn’t Make It are all coming up.

Gruesome Playground Injuries

Drama Dock will launch its 49th season with “Gruesome Playground Injuries,” a play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, running Friday through Sunday at Open Space for Arts & Community, located at 18870 103rd Ave. SW.

The two-person play, which has garnered rave reviews in Houston, New York and Seattle, tells the story of the decades-long friendship of two friends, and the way they come to understand the ways that both love and pain have shaped the people they have become.

Drama Dock’s production is directed by Samantha Sherman and will feature performances by local actors Kenny Alton and Tessa Wood.

Tim Couldn’t Make It

The Vashon acoustic/vocal ensemble, Tim Couldn’t Make It, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Wine Shop Vashon, at 17205 Vashon Hwy SW.

Doug Pine, Rick Dahms, and Bruce Phares will launch a live music series at the newly renovated Wine Shop Vashon, which offers an intimate atmosphere and casual dinner menu in Vashon Village. The band is known for its humorous and lighthearted take on a wide spectrum of Americana compositions.

Call 206-408-67323 for reservations, which are recommended due to the intimate setting.

Norwegian lecture and photos

Finn Brobakken, of Norway, will present a short lecture and photographs detailing “Places you didn’t know to visit in Norway” at the Vashon Lutheran Church twice this month.

The first lecture took place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19; the second is at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21.

Brobakken will discuss a variety of smaller, lesser-known locations that may be of interest to tourists visiting Norway. He also promises that no lutefisk will be served in conjunction with the event.

Meow Meow

Music fans might remember that at Pink Martini’s 2024 concert at VCA, a performer named Meow Meow made a boisterous guest appearance. But that was only a glimpse of the wild world of cabaret chanteuse Meow Meow.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, islanders will have the opportunity to fully experience the post-postmodern diva that is Meow Meow — a performer described by the London Daily Standard as “part Joan Collins, part Lady Gaga, and part Liza Minnelli.”

Contra dance

Attend a contra dance from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Vashon Havurah, located at 15401 SW Westside Hwy.

Contra is a walked social dance — a square dance cousin that originated in New England. You don’t need a partner or know-how; the caller teaches each dance before the musicians start fiddling. Bring water and shoes that fit the definition of being “midway between slip and grip.”

Contra dances at the Havurah are currently being held every second and fourth Saturdays. Dances will also take place March 8 and 22, and into April.

Contact dpdolstad@gmail.com to receive regular information about the dances.

Alice in Wonderland

Tumble down the rabbit hole with the cast of “Alice in Wonderland,” to be presented by students of Vashon Center for the Arts’ youth musical theater program, at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Vashon Center for the Arts.

The Sunday matinee performance is billed as “sensory friendly,” geared toward audience members who are seniors or very young, or those who have sensitivities.

Visit vashoncenterforthearts.org for tickets.

Acrobatic Conundrum

Acrobatic Conundrum, a virtuoso ensemble of circus artists, will present “The Circus of Second Chances,” at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

Ensemble members Emma Curtiss, Melissa Knowles and Terry Crane will perform astounding circus stunts throughout the evening. The 85-minute show, appropriate for all ages, features rope acrobatics, Cyr wheel, hand-balancing, live baking, and clowning.

Max Sarkowsky, a theater artist from Vashon and Seattle, is the sound, audio and scenic designer of the show.
