Valentine’s jazz concert
Seattle jazz vocalist Mercedes Nicole and a quartet of hot players will play straight-ahead jazz at the Blue Heron Art Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day.
Nicole will be joined by Beth Wulff on piano, Jeremy Jones on drums, multi-instrumentalist Thaddeus Spae on guitar and Mikel Rollins on bass.
Tickets are $13 for Vashon Allied Arts members, seniors and students, and $15 general admission. Champagne and chocolate are included.
Poets talk Scandinavia
The Poetry Salon monthly gathering of poetry lovers has become a bit more substantial. The evening’s topic is chosen a month before, and participants may read and research before the resulting rich discussion.

Quartet at book shop
Me & The Boys Quartet plays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Vashon Bookshop. The quartet will play blues, originals, bluegrass, sing-a-longs and toe-tappin’ delights.
‘Kindness’ at Silverwood
Silverwood Gallery opens “Random Acts of Kindness” at noon Friday, Feb. 6. The show includes works by Hita von Mende, Terry Donnelly, Mary Liz Austin, Kira Bacon, Al Bradley, Sharon Munger, Brian Fisher, Clare Dohna and Cynthia Zheutlin.

Quinn McCarthy, who has a February show at The Hardware Store Restaurant, is an Island native who began taking photos to document his time spent living abroad. His work focuses on landscapes, macro photography, wildlife and photos of Vashon. He strives to capture his photographic subjects during quiet, “un-self-conscious” moments.
