Local artist helps create an Olympic mural
Islander Geri Peterson’s painting of Pacific Coast sea life will be part of a large mural on display in Vancouver, British Columbia, during the Olympic games.
Peterson was asked to contribute to “Kunamokst,” a mural spearheaded by MuralMosaic, a Canadian group responsible for many large-scale, collaborative projects.
More than 200 artists, ages 16 to 91, contributed to “Kunamokst,” which can be viewed at www. www.muralmosaic.com/kunamokst.html.
The 12-foot-by-21-foot mural will remain on display on the second floor art studio of West Vancouver’s Spirit Square throughout the Olympic games.
Vashon Youth Council hosts an open mic

Exhibit at Buddha Bar is showcase for a painter
Seattle painter Claudia Fuenzalida Johns is having an exhibit at Buddha Bar & Lounge, which is located inside Spice Route Cuisine of India’s restaurant space.
Johns’ color-drenched and emotive paintings of women often feature images of doves and wings.
The show will be on view throughout the month of February.
A famed maestro speaks at Blue Heron
The choral conductor Abraham Kaplan will share a conversation with Vashon Island Chorale and Vashon Opera director Gary Cannon at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Blue Heron Art Center. The talk is part of Vashon Allied Arts’ Arts & Humanities Series.
Kaplan directed choral studies at Juilliard School of Music for a decade, taught for the School of Sacred Music of Union Theological Seminary and directed the choral program for New York State Summer School of the Arts. In Seattle, he directed choral studies at the University of Washington and was associate conductor to Gerard Schwartz at Seattle Symphony. Kaplan considers his compositions his single greatest professional achievement.

Two artists have a show at VALISE
Pascale Judet and Jiji Saunders are exhibiting their work at VALISE through February.
Saunder’s work — a mixture of paintings, installation and video — has the loose title of “Petit Mal.”
Judet’s mixed media constructions feature dreamscapes inhabited with playful creatures and depicted in a bold reverie of colors.
The gallery is open on Saturdays through February.

Suzanna Leigh gives a talk about China
Islander and artist Suzanna Leigh will host a special presentation at Vashon Tea Shop at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21.
There is a $10 suggested donation for Leigh’s talk, which will include a description of her silk paintings, now on display at the shop.
She’ll also show photographs and tales of the trip to China that inspired her exhibit.
Two Wall Gallery has two calls for artists
Two Wall Gallery wants artists to submit work for two upcoming exhibitions.
The gallery’s April show, “Foolery,” will focus on paintings, photographs and prints that trick the eye with processes, including recreation of material surfaces, trompe l’oeil, reverse perspective and prints accompanied by printing plates/blocks/screens. Please submit one to five jpegs to Patti at pingpsb@yahoo.com. The deadline is March 5, and art must be delivered by March 27.
