Dance the night away at the Bike

Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi has a full lineup of talent scheduled for the weekend, starting with free acoustic sets by songbirds Olivia De La Cruz and Sarah Christine from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 1. All ages are welcome.

At 9:30 p.m., DJ Organic Collective will take over to play a free, danceable mix of reggae, chill, hip-hop and more, using live instruments, electronics and drum machines. The DJ show is for ages 21 and older.

Sugarcane String Band, from Portland, Ore., will play a free mix of bluegrass, blues, funk and soul at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2.

Pete Welch, the concert organizer, said the Bistro is clearing out the tables to make a dance floor, and audiences will hear some “serious foot-stomping music.”

The Sugarcane String Band show is also for ages 21 and older.

House Engine returns to the Bike at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, for a free, all-ages show of rock, alternative country, Motown and funk.

Notable drummer joins the Doilys

Renowned rock drummer Thom Mooney will play a free show with The Doily Brothers at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, at Sportsmen’s Inn.

Mooney, who recently moved to the Island, has a bio that is steeped in some of the biggest names in the history of rock.

Along with Todd Rundgren, he founded the seminal band, Nazz, which opened for The Doors in 1967.

Mooney has also worked with with Cheap Trick, John Hiatt, Jimmy Buffet, Meatloaf, Dan Fogelberg, Stephen Stills, Hoyt Axton, Tanya Tucker, Paris (a trio that included guitarist/singer Bob Welch from Fleetwood Mac and bassist Glen Cornick of Jethro Tull) and Vashon resident Danny O’Keefe. He has also performed with several symphony orchestras.

Mooney is also an expert in Irish percussion and speaks and teaches the Gaelic language.

Mooney said he’s looking to playing with the Doilys, a band that has been an Island fixture for years.

“I love those guys,” he said. “You never know what songs they are going to pull out.”

‘Fam Jam’ benefits chorus

The Colwell Brothers, Herb Allen, and an all-family Cajun band, The Riptide Ramblers, will play at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Vashon High School theater.

The show, dubbed “Family Reunion — Fam Jam,” will raise money for Vashon Island Youth Chorus scholarships.

The Youth Chorus will be on hand for the “jam” along with singer-songwriters Dom and Madeline Wolczko and other family and friends.

The Colwell Brothers are former Columbia recording artists and globe-trotting musicians.

Along with impresario Herb Allen, the brothers created Up With People, an international educational program and touring show that traveled to six continents, performing music in 42 languages and dialects.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and children and are available at the door.

Salish Seas brings baroque

Salish Sea Concerts will present clavichordist Owen Daly and baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan in concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at Vashon Methodist Church.

Daley, who is from Salem, Ore., makes and plays the clavichord, which is the quietest of all 18th-century keyboard instruments,.

The program, billed as “Empfindsamkeit: The Clavichord in the Baroque,” will feature music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Gottfried Müthel, Johann Joachim Quantz and František Benda.

According to Cohan, “Empfindsamkeit is a mid-18th century guiding principle prescribing the most delicate, sensitive use of musical color, which was highly espoused by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who was one of Beethoven’s favorite composers.”

Pearl Django plays

The well-known ensemble Pearl Django will play at Blue Heron Art Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2.

Pearl Django has several CDs to its credit. Band members include Neil Andersson and Ryan Hoffman on guitar, Michael Gray on violin, Rick Leppanen on bass and David Lange on accordion. For more information, visit www.pearldjango.com.

Allison Trundle is at Two Wall

Two Wall Gallery is opening an exhibit of paintings by Vashon artist Allison Trundle from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 1.

A native of Tennessee, Trundle migrated to the Pacific Northwest in the late 1990s, after studying painting, sculpture and flamenco dance at the University of New Mexico. She has exhibited several times on the Island.

Trundle described her paintings as “a study of color, light and movement.”

VALISE shows its members’ art

VALISE Gallery will exhibit a roundup of work by its 11 member artists. The show will have an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 1. The gallery will also extend its hours to correspond to the Vashon Island Art Studio Tour, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, May 2 and 3 and 9 and 10. Blue Heron dancers perform

Dancers of all ages have been seen at all hours in the Blue Heron dance studio, pushing themselves toward the perfect pointe, highest leap and ultimate stretch in preparation for the upcoming annual spring performance extravaganza.

Evening performances of the recital will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9. Matinees will be performed at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10.

The recital will feature about 150 Blue Heron Dance students ages 3 to adult presenting a spirited potpourri of ballet and modern dance, from original works to “Carnival of Animals” by French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns and “Serenade” by Tchaikovsky.

Civic Ballet takes on ‘Swan Lake’

As a tribute to a large number of graduating seniors, the Vashon Junior Civic Ballet is gearing up to present its spring performance, “Swan Lake.”

The ballet will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, and 2 p.m., Sunday, May 17, at Vashon High School.

“Swan Lake” is perhaps the best-known ballet of all time and was the first ballet score written by Peter Tchaikovsky.

The cast for Swan Lake will be Alexis Carleton and Annelise Bogue, sharing the role of Odette, the princess magically transformed into a white swan; Carrie Chunn and Caitlin Willing, sharing the role of Odile, the black swan and daughter of the sorcerer; Jarrod Swenson and Erik Hansen as Siegfried the Prince and Keanu Roush in the role of the sorcerer.

Vashon Junior Civic Ballet is sponsored by Vashon Park District and made up of dancers ages 4 to 24.

Prices are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Children younger than 5 are admitted free.
