Blue Heron offers a jewelry trunk show
Enjoy jewelry, chocolate and champagne when Blue Heron Gallery hosts The Zuzko jewelry trunk show from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 20. The show will offer earrings, necklaces and rings.
The artist behind the collection, Zuzana Korbelarova, was born in Prague but now lives on Vashon.
Korbelarova said she began designing jewelry several years ago because she struggled to find jewelry she liked. Korbelarova’s husband gave up trying to buy her jewelry and instead gifted her with tools and a jewelry class to learn to create her own wearable art.
She works primarily with sterling silver and enjoys the unusual shapes and colors of natural gemstones.
“They carry their own power,” she said of the stones.
Blue Heron Gallery curator Janice Mallman said she discovered Korbelarova’s work at the Tacoma Art Museum gift shop.
“I loved it immediately, and when I discovered she lived on Vashon, I thought it would wonderful to have a trunk show, something we’ve never done before,” Mallman said.
Poets gather at an event for ‘A Wild Taste’
Island poet Ann Spiers and fine-art book designer and printer Catherine Alice Michaelis will celebrate the May Day Press release of their collaboration, “A Wild Taste,” from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at the Land Trust Building. Island poets Cal Kinnear and Lonny Kaneko will join Spiers and Michaelis in a short reading of love poems in honor of the Vernal Equinox.
“A Wild Taste” is a collection of Spier’s poems written as labels for blackberry jelly jars — her annual handmade birthday gifts to her true love. Michaelis’ design reflects the blackberry theme. Refreshments served will also echo the berry theme.
