A new film about bees has a sting

Why have honeybees been mysteriously disappearing from hives across the planet?

Find out when the Vashon Film Society presents “Vanishing of the Bees” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18. Admission to the documentary screening is $9 and $8 for students and seniors. The documentary film investigates the devastating effects of Colony Collapse Disorder, a problem that scientists say poses a severe threat to the food supply worldwide.

Critics have raved about the film. Filmstar called it “The most important documentary film since ‘An Inconvenient Truth.”

Heritage association recieves award to preserve collection

The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association will better preserve its expansive historical photograph collection with funding recently awarded by 4Culture, King County’s cultural arts agency.

The heritage association will use the $2,000 awarded through 4Culture’s Heritage Collection Care Funding Program to re-house its collection and photocopy reference set for researchers, who often request access to the photos for various projects.

The association was one of 19 recipients to receive funding from the program this year.

‘Overdose’ at Luna

Peter Ray’s film series Lunavision will return to Café Luna at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, with a screening of “Overdose,” a new documentary from Swedish director Martin Borgs. The English-language film is an in-depth look at the global economic crisis, but Ray said it offers “a foreign perspective of how we got here and where we might be going.”

The evening will also include two short films on a related subject. All Lunavision events are free and open to anyone interested in viewing topical films and being a part of the discussion afterward.
