Salsa dancing on Thursday night

Café Luna will clear the tables away to make room for free community salsa dancing from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2. The first 30 minutes of the evening, hosted by Darryl Caldwell, will be a dancing lesson. After that, students are on their own to dance the night away.

Check out TV Dinner at the Bike

A band called TV Dinner will play a free show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Red Bicycle Bistro. The band serves up renditions of jazz, rock and soul music made famous by movies and television shows. Band members include Dianne Krouse on sax and clarinet, Pat Reardon on guitars, Steve Meyer on stand-up bass, Andre Sapp on electric mandolin and Fletcher Andrews on drums.

The Diggers dig in at Café Luna

The Diggers, an Island band whose members describe themselves as “farmers, activists, autodidacts and musicians,” will play a free show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Café Luna. The band includes Danny Salonen on drums, Camille Coldeen on vocals and intruments, Nick Simmons on vocals and guitar and David Salonen on bass and fiddle.

An Island band mixes old and new

A Vashon band called Cargo Jam will play a free show at Red Bicycle Bistro at 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27. The band, which includes two guitarist and a sax player, plays mostly original compositions along with a sprinkling of John Mayer, Eric Clapton and B.B. King covers.

Damon Buxton performs on Saturday

Damon Buxton, a guitarist and composer working in the tradition of the Windham Hill recording artists, will play a free show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Café Luna. Buxton’s 2007 recording “Forgiving Dreams” was produced by Will Ackerman, the founder of Windham Hill Records, and his newest release, “Rotation Of Earth,” is available at www.damonbuxton.com.

An artist offers holiday items for sale

Andie Styner, an artist who operates Roobieblue Studios on Vashon, will have a sale of framed photos, greeting cards and other gift items at her studio this weekend. The studio, at 9807 S.W. 216th Street, will be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28.

Jacqui Lown show wraps up

The final weekend of Jacqui Lown’s exhibit of oils and watercolors inspired by her work in Olympic National Park will take place from 10 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Vashon Intuitive Arts.

Get Ready for ‘Guys and Dolls’

Vashon Allied Arts will present a teen musical theater production of “Guys and Dolls” in early 2011. The production will be part of a class for middle- and high-school aged kids taught by Marita Ericksen at the Blue Heron, beginning on Jan. 11. Ericksenn has recruited Drama Dock veterans Tish Lopez and Rich and Sue Wiley to help with the production. Everyone who registers for the class will be in the production. Audition materials including script excerpts and vocal parts will be available at the Blue Heron on Dec. 6. For more information call 463-5131. Scholarships are available.

The Art Studio Tour is coming up

Save the first two weekends in December to shop locally for unique gifts at the Vashon Island Holiday Art Studio Tour. Almost 40 studios will be open for the event, showcasing the creations of more than 100 artists. Work in every medium will be available for purchase. The tour is also a chance for Islanders to visit artists in the places where paintings, sculptures and other works of art are created, and see hands-on demonstrations by artists at work.
