An exhibit and talk by Odin Lonning
Tlingit artist Odin Lonning has a show running through March at Quartermaster Inn & Restaurant.
The 20 pieces in the show embody cultural heritage, story designs and a strong connection with animals and nature. Lonning’s career as an award-winning Native artist spans more than 30 years. He is an accomplished educator, heritage specialist and dancer.
Lonning will be at Books by the Way at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 20, to give a family-friendly talk called “Stories in Cedar.” Through his artwork and ancestral stories, Lonning will describe the origins of animal crests in the Tlingit clan system. Rod Smith offers a collection of art
Islander Rod Smith, who is an artist and musician, recently helped bankroll a trip to Park City, Utah, for a group of local musicians who played in a music festival that took place during the Sundance Film Festival.
“One of my primary goals was to put the pieces together so that we could take the prodigious talent from this Island and put it on the world stage every year,” Smith said.
Now, to help recover the costs of the trip, Smith is selling a personal collection of his own artwork.
Smith said that in the past decade, he has placed his “medieval mind art” in Trinity College Dublin, the library of Les Compagnons du Devoir in Paris and the home of author Tom Robbins.
