Island artists Matthew Olds and Heather Joy both won jury prizes in “Expressions Northwest: The 11th Annual Art Port Townsend Juried Art Competition.” Olds captured the coveted “best of show” award for his work “(de)Construction Bridge,” and Joy won a special award for her artwork “Land Grab #1.”
The juror for the show was Jess Van Nostrand, exhibitions curator for Cornish College for the Arts in Seattle.
Another Vashon artist, Mary Lynn Buss, was awarded The Tile Heritage Prize at a juried exhibition on display during the fourth annual Handmade Tile Festival in Seattle in October.
The juror was John Taylor, of University of Washington’s ceramics department. Buss’s tile piece, “Great Barrier Reef,” was awarded the prize for the work that, in the juror’s opinion, best represented the ceramic traditions in America.
