Vashon Center for the Arts promises an evening of visual and gustatory delight during its annual art auction preview party, artist reception and Taste of Vashon event slated for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
More than 100 pieces of fine art will cover the walls and pedestals in the Koch Gallery along with descriptions of the numerous special events and adventure packages that will be offered during “Swing Time at VCA — Art Auction 2017.”
The two-evening auction will be held at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22 and 23, at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA).
While islanders take a sneak peek at the artwork in the gallery on Friday, tables in the lobby will be lined with platters of appetizers donated by over 20 island restaurants, chefs, caterers and bakers for Taste of Vashon.
“It’ll include pretty near all the restaurants and bakeries on the island,” said Kevin Hoffberg, VCA board member and 2017 auction chairperson. “It’s really a remarkable experience seeing all this amazing art while sampling sweet and savory morsels. It’s (offered) in the spirit of being a gift to the community.”
Taste of Vashon contributors will include Bramble House, Caffe Vita, Casa Bonita, Gravy, Greenside Grill, The Hardware Store Restaurant, Herban Feast, La Boucherie, Maven Mercantile, May Kitchen + Bar, Partner’s Crackers, Red Bicycle Bistro &Sushi, Saucy Sisters, Snapdragon, Sugar Shack, Vashon Island Baking Company, Vashon IGA Market, Zombiez Burgerz, Jennifer Brenner and Rebecca Lanphear.
“It’s fun to taste the food from all the different restaurants,” said Mary O’Leary Bryant, VCA board member and coordinator of Taste of Vashon. “They are all really generous with their donations.”
Hoffberg noted that the island’s eateries and foodie culture have received positive press over the past year.
“We’ve been written up for the quality of food on our island,” he said.
Hoffberg also highlighted the quality of the art to be auctioned, calling it stunning, and cited the work of the six commissioned artists — Candy Gamble, Ted Kutscher, Christina Nichols, Shawn Nordfors, Kathy Pine, Julie Speidel and celebrated senior artist Penny Grist.
To kick off the auction, Hoffberg said that during the preview party, the winning raffle ticket — one out of 200 sold at $50 apiece — will be announced for a “top of the line” e-bike.
“Friday marks the first public view of the amazing art and experiences that local artists, businesses and friends of the arts have contributed to this year’s gala and auction,” Hoffberg said. “Every year feels like it’s the best year ever, and this is no exception.”
The preview party is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the September auction, both Friday and Saturday nights, are available at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
