Gallery Cruisers will find something special at the Blue Heron on Friday: an array of items that will be auctioned off at the Vashon Allied Arts Art Auction later this month.

The auction, on Sept. 25 and 26, will whisk attendees back in time to a 1930s speakeasy, full of fine art, food and jazz. And this Friday, Sept. 4, people can get a taste of what’s to come — from works by more than 100 Island artists to hors d’oeuvres donated by Island restaurants and chefs.

Highlights of the auction each year are works by commissioned artists. This year’s six artists are Kira Bacon, Curt Minier, Ric Peterson, Mary Rothermel, Gay Schy and Cynthia Zheutlin. Their works will be featured alongside the paintings, sculptures, photography, furniture, jewelry and more by other local artists. And for the first time, “Juror Awards” will be presented to artists whose work is recognized by a panel of Island artist jurors.

The Art Auction — “Art … and All That Jazz” — promises to be one of the biggest and best events of the year, organizers said, with era-appropriate menus and entertainment both nights.

“Come for the party, and go home with great memories and a piece of original art from our incredibly generous Island artists,” said Molly Reed, Vashon Allied Arts executive director.

Tickets may be purchased now for one or both nights of the art extravaganza at the Blue Heron or by calling 463-5131. Friday night tickets, $45, include a speakeasy buffet dinner and beverages; Saturday night tickets are $120, and include a multi-course gourmet dinner, beverages, champagne and a gift for each guest.
