Around town

Films, music and more will provide several arts opportunities in the coming days

Ian Moore at the Bike

Vashon is lucky to count musician Ian Moore as an island resident, while Moore’s fans are lucky to hear him play a small venue without leaving the island. Moore and his band The Lossy Coils will return to the Red Bike for a special evening beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.

Moore’s guitar talents first won him attention, but as the Tucson Weekly noted, his recent albums mark Moore as one of the most diverse and soulful singer-songwriters around. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com.

First Friday art film

The Vashon Film Society will welcome Seattle film director Megan Griffiths back to the Vashon Theatre,  where she will answer questions after a screening of her newest film, “Lucky Them.”

The film stars Toni Collette as Ellie Klug, a Seattle rock journalist assigned by her editor (Oliver Platt) to track down an enigmatic musician from her past. Klug is joined by an eccentric amateur filmmaker (Thomas Haden Church). An offbeat adventure ensues as Klug grapples with friendship, love and being middle-aged in a youth culture.

Paul Newman was involved with the script until his death, when his wife, Joanne Woodward, took over as executive producer. Griffiths, well known for promoting the Northwest as a location for shooting and post production, filmed “Lucky Them” in Seattle in 2013.

The Vashon Film Society presents special feature and documentary presentations on First Fridays following the art walk. “Lucky Them” plays at 9:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $7 at the door.

A musical tribute to England

Vashon Chamber Music will open its new season with a concert titled “Tribute to England,” featuring the music of Frank Bridge, Gerald Finzi, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten. Guest performers include the Los Angeles chamber music troupe Pittance and Vashon baritone Andrew Krikawa.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Methodist church. Tickets are $20 for VAA members and seniors, $24 for general audience and are sold at VAA and vashonalliedarts.org.

The Rippin Chicken at the Bike

The Rippin Chicken band will return to the Red Bike for another evening of funky, bugaloo and soul jazz at 8:30 p.m. Friday. After performing for a decade in groups such as The Funk Revolution, The Lucky Mystery Now Orchestra and The Bucks, The Rippin’ Chicken now plays its own brand of power-house rhythm.

Grammy nominated Native flute player

Raven’s Nest will bring Grammy-nominated Native flute player Vince Redhouse to Vashon for a concert from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Vashon High School theater. Redhouse is a renowned traditional Native flute player.

“I believe music is more than what we hear but something that we feel at a very deep place,” Redhous recently said in an email. “Music for me is one of the greatest expressions of spirit and heart and healing, and it is the gift I am blessed to share,”

Tickets are available at The Vashon Island Baking Company and by calling Raven’s Nest at 567-5826.

Celtic harp and guitar

Head over to Vashon Cohousing for an evening featuring the Celtic harp duo of Deb Knodel and Jane Valencia, with Steve Baughman on Celtic guitar. The musicians will play solos, duets and trios and will tell stories.

Knodel and Valencia are known for their imaginative and textured harp playing. Steve Baughman is an innovative guitarist with a sensitive style and impeccable technique. The concert will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Cohousing’s common house. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth, $25 for families and are available at the Vashon Bookshop and brownpapertickets.com.

Art history talk on Michelangelo

Obsession is the theme of this season’s popular VAA Arts & Humanities art history talks by Rebecca Albiani. Albiani will highlight artists who continually return — obsessively — to the subject that fascinated and tormented them but drove them to create. Michelangelo will be the subject of the first talk at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Methodist church. Tickets are $14 for VAA members, students and seniors, $18 general audience and are available at VAA or vashonalliedarts.org.
