First Friday art film showcases L.A. movie house
The Vashon Film Society will present “Out of Print,” a documentary about the role of revival cinema at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Theatre, as part of the First Friday Art Film Series.
In the film, director Julia Marchese profiles the New Beverly Cinema, a renowned single-screen movie theater in Los Angeles. She interviews well-known directors and actors who praise the old-time movie house.
In a press release, Marchese said, “The New Bev is a theater where a double feature is still $8 … where David Lynch pops by for a secret Q & A, where directors program a week of their favorite films.”
Tickets are $7 at the box office.
Soul and funk music will fill the Red Bike
The seven-piece soul and funk band Soul Senate will play its high-energy rhythm and dancing tunes beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Red Bike.
Soul Senate bridges the funky music of the 1960s and early 70s with modern music. The group claims its own musical territory with dancing grooves, well-crafted arrangements and vocal songs. The free show is open for all ages until 11 p.m., then 21 and older only.
Island musicians pay tribute to music legend
Vashon musicians Loren Sinner, Kat Eggleston, Jeff Kanzler, Michael Whitmore, Mike Dumovich, Rebekah Kuzma and Star Anna will play a tribute and benefit show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. The evening, called “Love Me Some, Townes Van Zandt,” is both a tribute to the legendary American songwriter Townes Van Zandt and a benefit for Vashon Youth & Family Services.
According to organizer Debra Heesch, Van Zandt taught Vashon musican Ian Moore to finger-pick guitar. Moore’s father and Van Zandt were friends in Austin, where Moore grew up.
A donation of $10 or more will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will benefit Vashon Youth & Family Services.
