Vashon Repertory Theatre (VRT) will celebrate Northwest women playwrights in early March with a series of five play readings in its fifth annual Incubator Series of new plays.
The four-day event, staged at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA), opens with an original play by islander Deb McCabe, “A Place Like This,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6. In her one-act, McCabe presents a dystopian view of a tomorrow where a family must hide from oppression.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, VRT will present “Angel of Belgrade,” by Kendra Phillips, based on the true story of a Serbian woman in her 70s reflecting on her life as a teen during the Holocaust.
Saturday, March 8 will mark International Women’s Day, when VRT will join forces with Women Hold the Key, a community-driven nonprofit, and VCA in a full day of celebrating feminine creativity.
On that day, the Incubator Series will stage two plays. The first, at 2 p.m., is “Becoming Awesome,” by three-time Incubator Series contributor Y York. This play is a young woman’s coming-of-age story with a tender twist. At 7:30 p.m., “Mercy,” a musical by Elizabeth Heffron and Hope Wechkin, will bring Seattle theater scene star Sarah Rudinoff to Vashon to lead a cast of island singers and actors as they make their way through the ups and downs of trying to save lives in a crazy healthcare system.
The Incubator Series finale, at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, is a family-friendly adventure tale by Maggie Lee, “Sheathed,” telling the story of a fictional fantastical universe 10 years after a long, devastating civil war between the followers of Lord Tsuka and the Empress Kaji.
Every Incubator Series play will close with a talk-back with the cast, and opportunity for audience feedback.
