A night of sizzling comedy will take place at 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Bicycle Bistro. There is a $5 cover for the adult-oriented show.

The evening, featuring seven stand-up acts, is being hosted by Islander Steffon Moody. He’ll welcome local yuksters Katherine Daves, Darryl Caldwell, Aaron Calhoun, Michael Fitzpatrick, Harris Levinson, Richard Moore and Mark Sayre to the stage.

Moody described stand-up comedy as a high-wire act.

“In general, comedians are expected to get a laugh about every 15 seconds,” he said.   “It’s an on-stage reality show, where the possibility of failure is integral to the show itself.”

On the flip side, though, Moody also described himself as “a living testament to the healing power of comedy.”

In May, Moody broke three bones in his leg while playing softball, and had to undergo complicated surgery to repair the damage.

His situation was filled with financial as well as physical peril, since he was without health insurance, and his work as a laborer and performer requires him to be on his feet.

Islanders stepped forward, he said, at a fundraiser comedy show in June — an event that netted more than $2,500 to compensate for Moody’s loss of income during his recuperation. Additional donations helped cover other costs related to the injury. Moody also successfully applied to Haborview Medical Center’s charity program, which paid for most of his medical expenses.

Now, three months out from the accident, Moody is financially solvent and quite literally back on his feet.

“I’m doing great,” he said.

He added that he has immense gratitude toward his friends and neighbors who helped him in his hour of need.

“The kind of support I received was just overwhelming and fabulous,” he said.
