On July 26, islanders can take a trip to the Aloha State — no plane ride required — when Open Space for Arts & Community presents the acclaimed Hawaiian music trio, Waipuna, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26.
The trio, featuring Kale Hannahs, Matt Sproat, and David Kamakahi, preserves tradition while introducing a contemporary energy to Hawaiian classics and the island sound.
Waipunaʻs music has been widely acclaimed and earned eight Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards (Hawaii’s version of the Grammy Awards) for the band’s first four albums.
Hannahs is a veteran of the music scene, having earned a reputation as a steady bass player and vocalist. He has played and recorded with many of Hawaii’s most talented musicians and was a founding member of the award-winning group, ‘Ale’a.
Sproat was born and raised on O‘ahu, but is from the famous Sproat family on the Big Island. In 2003, Matt won the Big Island falsetto competition.
Kamakahi, whose father, Dennis Kamakahi, was one of Hawaii’s most prolific songwriters, started playing ukulele at the age of 15, studying his master and mentor Eddie Kamae.
The show will take place at Open Space, at 18870 103rd Ave SW.
