Dance the night away at the Bike
Cordaviva will bring a danceable beat to a free show at 8:30 p.m Friday at Red Bicycle Bistro. The nine-piece ensemble blends soukous, rumba, Afro beat, funk and Latin styles. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. and 21 and older after that.
A jazzy night at Vashon Winery
Island Jazz Quintet will play an outdoor concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at Vashon Winery, 10317 S.W. 156th St. The $12 admission price includes one Island Jazz Quintet CD and reduced wine prices. Student admission is free. Members of the ensemble are Maggie Laird, Richard Person, Todd Zimberg, Michael Gotz and Todd Gowers. The ensemble has recorded three albums and played countless live shows in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Give a boost to ‘Big Joy’
A Kickstarter campaign for the documentary film-in-progress, “Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton,” is going until July 15, aimed at raising $22,000 to complete an ambitious documentary about James Broughton’s life. To donate, visit www.kickstarter.com and search for the film’s title. Funds will be used to purchase archival footage, complete sound mixing and color correction, add music and bring Broughton’s poems and journals to life through animation. Broughton was a pre-Beat-era poet, pioneer underground filmmaker, gay man and artist who is now considered to be the father of West Coast experimental filmmaking. The film, produced by Islander Stephen Silha and directed by Eric Slade, was recently selected as one of 10 documentaries whose directors received a year-long fellowship granted by New York’s Independent Filmmaker Project.
Island groups tapped for grants
Three Island organizations have received grants from King County’s 4Culture Group Arts Project. Open Space for Arts & Community received $2,000 for its Burlesco Notturno and Open Air events, and Vashon Folkdancers won $2,000 to produce a series of ethnic music and dance concerts. Vashon Opera was awarded $1,800 for its production of “Così fan tutte.”
In the past, other Island groups have won grants from the same funding pool. In 2010, Vashon Park District received $2,500 for its series of free summer concerts, and Vashon Island Chamber Music Series and Festival won $3,200. In 2011, Vashon Island’s Chamber of Commerce received $2,000 for Strawberry Festival.None of these groups applied for funding this year.
Plan now to sail away with ‘Pirates’
Drama Dock will soon raise the curtain on Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic masterpiece, “The Pirates of Penzance.”
The show, directed by Drama Dock stalwart Elizabeth Anthony, has a cast of 30 Islanders. Tickets for the show, running at Bethel Church from July 13 to 22, can be purchased at Vashon Bookshop and www.brownpapertickets.com.
