Vashon Center for the Arts Musical Theatre program will present Disney’s “Aladdin JR” Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the center’s new stage in the Kay (Katherine L. White Hall).

Island kids, in grades four to 12, will perform a stage version of the beloved Disney classic with an Academy Award-winning score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.

Disney’s “Aladdin JR” tells the tale of street urchin Aladdin, who vies for the attention of the beautiful princess Jasmine. Using a genie’s magic power, Aladdin turns into a prince in order to marry her. The characters of Iago, Jafar, the Genie and more will join Aladdin and Jasmine in the musical adventure that is filled with magic, mayhem and the power of love.

The musical’s co-directors are Marita Ericksen and Chris Dawson. Stage manager and prop-maker Susan Kutscher and acting coach Sue Wiley assisted with rehearsals and help run the show.

Costumes were designed by Betsy Frazee. Judy Wright, acclaimed television prop designer, created the sets, with animated “sets” projected behind the actors.

Gabriel Dawson will play Aladdin; Laura Erickson will play Jasmine; Jafar and Iago will be played by Evan Erickson, and Maren MacLean and Cypress Securest will play the Genie.

The show will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19.

Tickets are sold at VCA, Heron’s Nest Gallery and vashoncenterforthearts.org
