One of Vashon’s most well-known organizations, The Backbone Campaign, will hold its second annual performance extravaganza and fundraiser this Saturday.

The event, dubbed “The Chocolatada,” will include chocolate, of course, but it will also boast performances by several high-energy acts.

The Backbone Campaign has long woven elements of performance, music and puppetry into high-profile political protests, and Saturday’s event lineup will reflect the group’s deep connection to the arts community on Vashon and beyond.

Two local performers and founding UMO Ensemble members, Steffon Moody and Kevin Joyce, will emcee the event, and a quartet of aerialists, Martha Enson, Esther Edelman, Cathy Sutherland and Carrie Anderson, will perform a trapeze act high above the party-goers at Open Space for Arts & Community.

A fiery Seattle Latin duo, Correo Aereo, will perform music from Venuzuela, Mexico and Argentina, and other surprise musical guests will also take the stage.

Bill Moyer, executive director of The Backbone Campaign, said that a lot of the fun behind the Chocolatada would revolve around the concept of chance.

“We wanted to weave in the idea of chance — how we are not usually in control of the circumstances or the hand we’ve been dealt,” Moyer said. “What really counts is how we play it.”

In keeping with that concept, members of The Moisture Festival Band will be on hand to lead audience members through a “Wheel of Fortune” themed game, and there will also be a mystery wine table and other games of chance throughout the evening.

According to Moyer, the evening’s whole point is to celebrate The Backbone Campaign’s mission and to “keep the emphasis on communty action and the joy of being agents of change.”

The Chocolatada will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Tickets, $25, are on sale at Vashon book stores and www.brownpapertickets.com.
