UMO Ensemble will debut a new work, “Box Set,” at Vashon Allied Arts on Saturday.

The show, to be performed twice that evening, will feature core UMO members Maria Glanz, David Godsey, Kajsa Ingemansson, Elizabeth Klob, Mik Kuhlman, Janet McAlpin and Lyam White. Additional guest artists are Sharon Barto, Christine White and Christine Williams.

UMO, based on Vashon for close to two decades, creates shows through a process rooted in physical theater, using improvisations in  character, vocalizing and movement to arrive at surprising theatrical conclusions.

“Box Set” — developed by the ensemble over six months — revolves around the many meanings what it means to be contained, and audiences can expect lots of physical clowning, choral work, humor and even a few ghost stories, said show organizers.

Those who come to the show will also be asked to get involved.

“’Box Set’ revisits UMO’s street theater roots and will include numerous audience-interactive vignettes,” said UMO executive artist Elizabeth Klob. “Each show will be different based on audience input.”

To that end, ensemble members are gearing their early show to family audiences, and hoping audiences expecting edgier fare will show up for their later show.

“There are always surprises when UMO performs,” Klob said.
