Kronos will feature the historic icon reproductions of Israeli artist Katrin Schwarz in November, with a reception planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Friday Nov. 7.

Schwarz’s works, born of a connection to her Russian homeland and her new home in Israel, are recreations of rare pieces from historic icon masters. These replicas are sanctified by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, also known as the Church of Resurrection. Each one of Schwarz’s pieces is hand-painted and is considered an original in the traditions of iconography.

The wooden boards used as the base for her icons are specifically prepared according to traditional icon painting techniques.

Katrin emigrated to Israel in the early 1990s from the former Soviet Union, where she had owned a gallery of contemporary Russian art. In Jerusalem she felt a compulsion to study religion and iconography. She spent several years engrossed in the study of Judaic, Christian and Muslim texts and began to draw inspiration from the old Italian, Russian and German masters of religious art. Schwartz created her first icon reproduction in 2003.
