A touring play that tells the inspiring story of the women’s suffrage movement in Washington state will have an Island performance this weekend.

The play, “Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices,” is a Book-It Repertory Theatre production that recounts how women fought to win the vote in Washington state in 1910.

The landmark victory for civil rights took place almost 10 years before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteed all American women the right to vote.

The play is based on a book by historian Shanna Stevenson — a chronicle not only of how the vote was won, but also how women have continued to struggle to achieve equality in education, politics and the workplace.

The show, presented by Vashon Park District, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Ober Park performance space.
