Islanders can groove to a mix of upbeat Indian pop rock, Brazilian samba and Afro-Cuban dance tunes at Vashon Allied Arts’ annual World Music Festival, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Camp Burton’s outdoor amphitheater.

Manoogh Hi, a Seattle band led by the Mumbai-born, single-named singer Mehnaz, will headline the event, which will also include performances by The Kiko Freitas Band and the Supersones Quintet.

Janice Randall, communications director at Vashon Allied Arts, described Manoogh Hi’s sound as “traditional Indian rhythmic sounds and Hindi words fused with American rock, pop and soul,” and promised a performance full of high-energy, theatrical whimsey.

The seven-member group has played the Fremont Fair, South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, and Bumbershoot. They recently released their first album.

The festival will open with a performance by Keki Freitas Quartet, a Seattle group that plays smooth samba and bossa nova music.

Freitas, who is originally from Sao Paolo, Brazil, is a world-renowned drummer who travels the world performing and teaching.

The Supersones Quintet, also on tap to play at the festival, has a sound that blends Spanish guitars, harmony, Afro-Cuban percussion and swing.

The group plays genres, including bolero and cha-cha, in addition to original and improvised Cuban music. The group has toured internationally and appeared in Seattle at venues such as The Triple Door, Northwest Folklife Festival and Tractor Tavern.

The festival will also include food by Shefidgets Catering, henna body art by Kara Jones and face painting by Lynn Brevig. Fair trade items from around the world will be sold by the Vashon shop, Giraffe.
