Renowned Spanish harpsichordist Irene Roldàn, winner of the Bach Prize and an additional special award at the 2022 International Bach Competition in Leipzig, Germany, will present a program of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach at 7 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit.
Roldàn will be joined in the concert by baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan, the artistic director of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival.
The concert will be the eighth and final performance in the 2024 Salish Sea Early Music Festival calendar.
The program will include the artists’ transcription for flute and harpsichord of the Sonata in C Minor for violin and obbligato (or fully written-out) harpsichord, works for solo harpsichord, and sonatas both for obbligato harpsichord and flute.
Roldàn currently lives and works in Basel, Switzerland. She has performed in solo recitals in festivals across Europe and as a soloist with several orchestras focusing on reviving unexplored 18th-century music from the Galant period. Her debut album, “Scarlatti & Beyond,” was recorded in June 2023 with the support of Fondazione Cariverona.
Cohan, who according to the New York Times can “play several superstar flutists one might name under the table,” has also performed throughout the world and won highly prestigious awards. He said he is thrilled to bring Roldàn to Vashon.
“I heard Irene play in Italy last summer and her playing is spectacular,” Cohan said.
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit is located at 15420 Vashon Highway SW. Admission is by suggested donation (a free-will offering) of $20 to $30. Those 18 and younger are free. For more information, visit salishseafestival.org/vashon.
