The cast of Vashon’s very own variety show — The Church of Great Rain — will revisit some of the show’s zaniest sketches during a special “best of” revival performance at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Red Bicycle Bistro.

The show, created by Islanders Greg Parrott and Frank Hein, blends comedy bits and musical performances in a style reminiscent of “A Prairie Home Companion” — but with a special Island emphasis.

“Vashon folks seem to really enjoy the twist on the traditional variety show, especially the comedy bits that parody life on Vashon,” said Parrott. “And as artists, we love holding up a big mirror on our community and laughing at ourselves. It’s great fun.”

The show has garnered enthusiastic audience support over the years, and recent performances held at Open Space for Arts and Community have attracted near-capacity attendance.

Last May’s season finale was enjoyed by more than 300 Islanders.

“That’s a far cry from the curious few who attended our first show,” said Parrott.

The show’s cast — dubbed “The Holy Roller Radio Players” — includes Lyn McManus, Cindy Hoyt, Jim Farrell, Jeff Hoyt, Jeanne Dougherty, Mik Kuhlman, Jon Whalen, Janet McAlpin, Karen du Four des Champs, Susan McCabe and David Godsey and KarenBiondo. The Church House Band is made up of Greg Parrott, Adrienne Mildon, Doug Ringer and Fletcher Andrews, with frequent guest appearances by legendary Vashon music icon John Browne.

Cast member Jeff Hoyt said that Sunday’s show will include audience favorites from several past shows, including sketches depicting how “Vashon and Maury Islands seek counseling to work out a few of their differences” and “a perilous stroll through conservative radio waves at KVI Beach.”

The cover charge is $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
