Many of our neighbors are perhaps allowing their idealism to devolve into elitism. The K2 complex has been vacant for far too long, and the desires of turning it into something for the common use of the community are not going to become a reality in this post-Great Recession world. While not meeting the hopes of some of us, the current Bakkhos proposal is the best practical deal for what has been a “white elephant” for quite some time. Elections do have consequences, and the vote to legalize recreational marijuana is bound to have an effect on all communities in Washington State. These consequences are not something we can hide from or avoid here on Vashon just because we are surrounded by water or because we self-identify as being unique.

Some of our neighbors with many more yesterdays behind them than tomorrows ahead are most strident in voicing their opposition to the Bakkhos proposal. I would hope they would realize that they have arrived at a time when they should be sharing more of their wisdom and experiences rather than their unmet ideals and pipedreams.

Very little — be it jobs, transportation, raising a family — will be easier for the youth of today than it was for people of my generation. The chance for good, safe, jobs here at home on the island for our young people is an opportunity that I believe should be supported.
