I am a 68-year-old woman who has lived on the Island for 43 years. The recent installation of rumble strips has been a source of grief because I can no longer fit my tricycle recumbent between the rumble strips and the road’s edge.

I am a 68-year-old woman who has lived on the Island for 43 years. The recent installation of rumble strips has been a source of grief because I can no longer fit my tricycle recumbent between the rumble strips and the road’s edge.

In addition, I am afraid to ride my road bike because the grooves are large and my tires narrow. The Safe Routes to School program for Chautauqua children is now jeopardized; parents can no longer pull their children in bike trailers, and mobility for disabled citizens is compromised.

The rumble strips are a safety hazard, and until they are removed, a way of life for many of us is gone if King County DOT continues its work. I, and many of my friends, now urge Executive Dow Constantine and Councilmember Joe McDermott to reverse the decision of King County DOT so that Vashon roads are safe for everyone.
