I want to add to the recent discussion of pedestrian safety: I am appalled by the large percentage of pedestrians who walk the highway and other roads facing the same way as traffic. Please, parents, teach your kids to always walk facing traffic. Young people especially often seem to walk three or four abreast, sometimes goofing off and oblivious to the traffic coming up behind them.
Especially in the dark, it is alarming to suddenly find that I am driving my car right next to a pedestrian who isn’t even aware of my position. At least if walkers, even wearing dark clothing and nearly invisible, are facing traffic, they can react if a driver veers in their direction because of a deer or some other reason.
