New program at transfer station works well

I recently took a pickup load of yard waste to the new facility at the transfer station located at 18900 Westside Highway. If you haven’t been there, you drive in to the toll booth and tell the operator that you have yard waste. The operator will hand you a weight card; you then proceed to the back of the old building for recycling to a new metal building on your left that looks like a hoop greenhouse.

I backed into this building to unload and found it was simple: Just put your waste on the growing pile of the same. An employee may check to see that you comply with the directions posted at the building’s entrance.

I had stuffed my truck full and expected to pay a large fee, but, when returning to the toll booth, my bill was only $12, and the waste weighed out at 240 pounds.

I recommend this approach to getting rid of your yard waste. It is a service that is provided by the King County Solid Waste Division in partnership with Zero Waste Vashon, and is a trial to determine if the island has enough yard waste to justify a processing facility on Vashon.
