Letter to the Editor: Many are praying for Daniel Haag’s speedy recovery

It was devastating to learn of Daniel Haag’s tragic accident. Daniel is a gem.

It was devastating to learn of Daniel Haag’s tragic accident. Daniel is a gem.

As one who participated in various actions to halt Glacier’s mining expansion on Maury Island, I was struck by the demeanor of nonviolence that Daniel displayed so beautifully.

On the second night we were in our kayaks, he was one of three confronted by the Coast Guard. Though the Coast Guard seemed sympathetic, that last night they were more impatient, pressuring us to sign forms acknowledging potential felony charges and large fines if any of us continued with direct action at the site. Daniel was not to be pressured as he calmly stated he would not sign anything until he read it all.

From the lockdown action to sitting in his kayak under the welder’s work bucket to insisting on his right to know what he was signing, Daniel was a model of serene nonviolence and utmost courage. He is truly Gandhian. Vashon has a treasure in this young man.

Many are sending prayers his way.
