Letter to the Editor: Better facilities make a difference at schools

Most Vashon residents are strong supporters of education and are aware that excellent schools strengthen our community. However, some may wonder if improving the high school facility is important for the education of our youth.

Several studies from around the country have shown that upgrading school buildings directly contributes to improved academic performance. Factors such as socioeconomic status and parental involvement are more important in academic success, but these are not easily influenced by concerned individuals. Improving school facilities is among the most effective means for the community to contribute to educational outcomes. Several factors in a newer facility, such as a safe, comfortable environment and modernized technology, contribute to enhance learning. Other tangible benefits attributed to newer facilities include fewer sick days, decreased behavioral problems, increased teacher effectiveness and improved teacher retention.

Even the new reality TV series “School Pride” plays on the fact that school makeovers improve academic achievements and enhance the community. Let’s continue our commitment to quality education. Vote “Yes” on Propositions 1 and 2.
