Island rower Mia Croonquist has won her third world medal, taking silver in a women’s four at the World Junior Rowing Championships last week in Hamburg, Germany.

Three Vashon boats chosen to compete in select even
On Sunday the Vashon Island Junior crew traveled to Bainbridge Island’s Eagle Harbor for the third annual Tri-Island Regatta, which traditionally pits teams from three islands — Vashon, Bainbridge and Orcas — against each other. This year, Olympia’s team substituted for Orcas Island. Vashon rowers took first place in nine of the 15 races and added second-place finishes in four more on the 1,400-meter course.
For the second year in a row, the spring regatta at Green Lake was hampered by poor weather and called off early. But not too early for Vashon crews to row in eight juniors and three masters events, medalling in all 11 races.
The Vashon Island Rowing Club kicked off its 2013 racing season with a spirited masters versus juniors regatta this month at Jensen Point. In the club’s annual scrimmage on March 3, young rowers went up against the VIRC’s seasoned master rowers, giving the older athletes a head start in the races. According to tradition, the day ended with a final race for the One Guinea Pig Cup.
It’s a typical Saturday morning in winter at the north-end ferry dock. Cars lined up the hill are filled with enthusiastic grandparents, parents armed with Costco lists, bleary-eyed brothers and sisters and nervous fourth- through eighth-graders en route to Seattle. These young Islanders aren’t leaving Vashon for a day trip or shopping, though. They’re off to play basketball.
