After a season marked by extreme highs and lows, the Vashon Island High School Pirate wrestlers showed remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, pulling together at the state championships last weekend in the Tacoma Dome.
A large and vocal Vashon fan base saw their team take second place at the highly competitive regional wrestling competition last Saturday at Klahowya Secondary School in Silverdale.
At last Saturday’s sub-regional competition, the Pirate grapplers served notice they are healthy and ready to roll through the post season.
On paper, this wrestling season was to have the greatest compilation of high school wrestling talent Vashon High School had ever produced. Hopes were high, and the excitement was infectious.
The Vashon Pirate wrestling squad completed day two of the Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene, Idaholast Saturday, December 19 with two of the 15 entrants making it deep in the medal round.
The Vashon High School Pirate wrestlers took to the practice mat Monday, Nov. 16, in preparation for an exceptionally tough schedule.
The Pirate football team closed out its 2015 season with a strong statement, crushing the Coupeville Wolves 70-31 Friday at the VHS stadium.

Once again, the Pirates proved that the name of the game is turnovers. Friday’s away game in Port Townsend had two onside kicks, a muffed punt return, a fumble and an interception that proved to be the difference in the game as Vashon lost a close one to the Chimacum Cowboys, 45-38.
The Pirates’ offensive woes continued last week, and for the first time all season, they were unable to find the end zone, losing to the Cascade Christian Cougars 44-0.
