Francis M. Sherman, who was the son of early Vashon settlers Salmon and Eliza Sherman, built the Sherman House in 1904 and in 1911 in two stages — the one-story back part of the house on S.W. 204th Street was built first, and the two-story front part was completed seven years later.
Portage has long been an important and interesting part of Vashon-Maury Island, providing the link between what was once two islands.
K2 Skis, founded 45 years ago on Vashon and once its biggest employer, relocated off-Island and off-shore in 2006, but remains a significant piece of the Island’s history.
Vashon Heights was platted in 1909 as a development, and that’s when the Island’s first dock was built, constructed to service the famous mosquito fleet that crisscrossed Puget Sound.
