Vashon Allied Arts received a 90-day extension on its permit application for its performing arts center, extra time it sought after receiving a four-page letter from the county raising a number of questions about the ambitious project.

The organization was to respond to the King County Department of Development and Environmental Services by July 22. With an extension in hand, VAA won’t need to respond until late September.

James Chan, assistant director of permitting for DDES, said the extension may suggest that VAA is considering a redesign. “They were going full speed ahead and then they suddenly put on the brakes,” he said.

But Kirk Robinson, VAA’s project manager, said the organization sought the extension because of the complexity of some of the questions DDES has raised. “We just wanted to be thorough in our response,” he said.
