Film Aid raises $4,500 for theater

Vashon Film Aid, a festival of films that featured 10 shows over eight days in January, raised more than $4,500 this month for Vashon Theatre, which is still recovering from a devastating burglary during the holidays of more than $10,000 in cash, candy and equipment.

“Film Aid was an incredible outpouring of generosity of time, skill and money,” said Eileen Wolcott, owner of Vashon Theatre.

The theater will use the money to purchase a new projector, one of the items that was taken in the burglary.

“It was great fun that couldn’t have happened without people in the film industry working their magic,” Wolcott said.

Each of the nine films and one night of shorts featured in Vashon Film Aid had a Vashon connection, with someone from the Island involved in the creation of each film.

Tall Tales Festival supports Vashon Wilderness Program

A Tall Tales Festival will take place on Vashon next week, when local storytellers will spin yarns at a family event intended to keep storytelling alive in the community.

The show will benefit the Vashon Wilderness Program. Performers include Steffon Moody, Crista Walker, Steve Jones and Leslie Enzian. Stacey Hinden will emcee the evening event, which will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Havuret Ee Shalom.

Free children’s opera on Saturday

A performance of “Little Red Riding Hood,” a children’s opera by Seymour Barab, will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Chautauqua Elementary School’s multipurpose room.

The production is free, courtesy of Vashon Opera and Vashon Park District. No tickets are necessary. Little Red Riding Hood will be played by Vashon Opera artistic director Jennifer Krikawa; the wolf will be played by Andrew Krikawa.
