Event showcases emerging island performers

Vashon Allied Arts’ Center for Dance will present its second annual dance — and now musical — performance, Original Works, this weekend at the Vashon High School theater.

Original Works began six years ago when Christine Juarez, artistic director of VAA’s Center for Dance, offered her senior dancers an opportunity to perform their own choreography as part of the annual spring ballet. Last year, Juarez brought Original Works out of its supporting role and gave it a solo — scheduling Original Works as its own show and inviting the entire island dance community to participate. This year, Juarez fulfilled her vision to include musicians.

“It’s all about showcasing young, emerging artists,” she said.

The dancers and musicians, ages 14 to 25, went through an audition and adjudication process, followed by in-depth coaching. All performers also participated in the production process. The show will include music, ballet, contemporary dance and tap.

Tickets are $12 for VAA members, students and seniors and $16 for general audience. Tickets are sold at the Blue Heron, vashonalliedarts.org and at the door.

Original Works will run at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
