Elke Robitaille and Carley Baer will play a free show of acoustic folk music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Café Luna. The two met for the first time in 2009 when they shared the stage at a songwriter showcase. They both have powerful voices and a flair for musical storytelling.
The Vin Baker Trio will play a show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Buddha Bar and Lounge, located inside Spice Route Indian Cuisine. Local singer/songwriter Chuck VanNorman will open the show, which is free with a canned food donation for Vashon Maury Community Food Bank.
Captain Dick & The Portholes will play a show at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Red Bicycle. Formed in the mid-1980s, the Island band has rocked the Island and beyond for decades. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m. and ages 21 and older after that. The cover charge is $5.
Dented Trucks, a family blues band from Olympia, will play a free show at Café Luna at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. The band cites influences including Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Vashon Film Society’s gala Oscar Night at the Vashon Theatre will return to the Island at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 7. The scholarship fundraising event is renowned for combining zany theatrics and family fun with efforts to support the Island’s movie house. From riding in a vintage limousine to watching the Academy Awards telecast live on the Vashon Theatre’s big screen, Oscar Night is a playful night out on the town for all ages. Advance tickets are $10 (they cost $12 at the door) and are available at Vashon Theatre, Books by the Way and Vashon Bookshop. Limo tickets, available at the theater, are $10 per carload and include a keepsake photo. Meal, beverages and snacks are also available à la carte. The best value is a $30 package that includes entrance, limo ride and photo and food.
