Boogie over to Luna
Rolf Jones-Moore will perform blues, boogie and jazz music in a free concert at 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Café Luna. Jones-Moore is a well-seasoned performer who has worked professionally on stages all over the country for more than 25 years.
Shake a leg at the Bike
A swing dance band, 7 on 7, will play a free, all-ages concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Red Bicycle Bistro. It’s the first time the popular Olympia-based band has played a show on the Island, and concert organizer Pete Welch said he hopes swing aficionados on Vashon will put on their dancing shoes for the show.
A Free Range concert
Vashon’s Free Range Folk Choir will present a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Methodist Church. Musical guests will include the Rock Island String Kollective (RISK) and students from Homestead School and Harbor School. Admission is free but donations are welcome.
Chamber music fest is here
Vashon Allied Arts will present the Vashon Chamber Music Festival at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 19 to 21. Thursday’s program, at the Methodist Church, features Odeonquartet, a contemporary ensemble that includes Island cellist, Rowena Hammill. They will perform works including original compositions by San Juan Island-based composer Alex Shapiro. Shapiro will give a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. Friday ‘s and Saturday’s evening concerts, at Blue Heron Art Center, will include works of Brahms and Schumann performed by Rowena Hammill and Douglas Davis, cellos; Martin Kuuskmann, bassoon; Duo Patterson, violin and viola; Françoise Régnat, piano; Patricia Kostek, clarinet; and Karin Choo, violin. A free family concert will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Blue Heron. Tickets to other shows are on sale at www.brownpapertickets.com and by calling 463-5131.
Vote in a VoV video contest
This spring, Voice of Vashon TV, in conjunction with Vashon Healthy Community Network, Welcome Vashon and 4Culture, launched the “Rule of Five” short video contest for videographers of all age and experience levels. The submissions are now ready for the community to view. Visit www.voiceofvashon.org and follow the links to vote for your favorite video. The videos will be shown on Comcast Channel 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, and Tuesday, May 24. The contest’s winner will be announced on May 29 at the Church of the Great Rain’s season finale.
