Although team results are still not available, there is much to celebrate with the conclusion of McMurray’s track and field season.

After five regular season meets, the team met up with all seven middle schools at the West Sound League Meet on Bainbridge Island May 28. Vashon sent 38 athletes to compete against larger schools with 80 to 120 athletes, and the Mustangs came away with personal best times, ribbons and six first-place finishes.

The most valuable team member award goes to Jack Summers. He won all four of his individual events (75-meter hurdles, 200-meter hurdles, 200 meters, high jump), anchored the boys 4×200-meter relay to second place (with Nick Betz, Garrett Starr and Shane Armstrong), and even set a school record in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches).

McMurray also took first place in both the boys and girls discus, with Shane Armstrong (100 feet, 8 inches) and Sarah Betz (68 feet, 6 inches) winning. Armstrong also placed third in the shot put and fifth in turbo javelin.

First eluded most other McMurray athletes, but the team had strong showings.

Nick Betz took second in the boys 400 meters with a personal best of 59 seconds; he took third in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. John Michael Monroe took second in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, 9 inches. Sixth went to Olin Nespor in the boys 75-meter hurdles and Garrett Starr in the 200 meters.

The McMurray girls started off the meet with a third- and fourth-place finish in the 75-meter hurdles, by Kalie Heffernan and Skyler Howard, respectively. Heffernan was McMurray’s only sixth-grader this season, but she showed fierce determination in all of her events. She also took third in the 200-meter hurdles.

Caitlyn Courtney took second in the 200-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. And both girls helped the 4×200-meter relay take third place (Heffernan, Alyson Laing, Maddy Royal and Courtney).

Lena deGuzman placed fourth in the girls 400 meters and fifth in discus.

Maddi Groen ran her best mile time of 6:35 to take fourth place (and an honorable mention goes to Brooke Sarver who entered the race at the last minute and placed seventh). Beatriz Sahagun took sixth in turbo javelin, and Diane Kennicott placed fifth in shot put. Girls relays took fifth in the 4×100-meter (Harper Howard, Skyler Howard, deGuzman and Sahagun) and fifth in the 4×400-meter (Marielee Storms, Mara Burns, Maddy Cowan and Keara Mulvihill).
