Harbor School officials say former Head of School James Cardo is no longer in the position after a move earlier this month by the board of trustees.
Cardo, whose last day was Sept. 4, had served as the head of the school since 2011. He first joined the school in the fall of 2001 and served for many years as the English teacher, according to Allison Reid, the school’s marketing and development director.
In an announcement released to the community last week, school officials noted Cardo’s contributions over the years along with his departure.
“James brought many great things to our school as a beloved teacher and Head of School. … We are grateful for the years of service James brought to the Harbor School, and we honor his contributions.”
In an interview, Reid pointed to Cardo as an instrumental person in moving the school forward when founder Toby Welch stepped down in 2008.
She noted he kept in place important elements, such as the school’s cornerstone values: travel study and service learning.
The announcement from the school also noted that the board of trustees has created a new leadership team, comprised predominantly of staff and faculty. The team has been tasked with bringing the school through the transition while a search for a new head of school is under way.
Harbor School opened in 1995 in a former elementary school building north of town, and until this year, it served students in grades four through eight. In April, the school purchased Carpe Diem, a primary school now located in the Presbyterian church.
Note: This version of the story corrects the date James Cardo started at Harbor School. It was 2001.
