Ellen Frohning

Ellen Frohning, a sophomore majoring in psychology and brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, has been named to the spring 2008 dean’s list in the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering.

Frohning, a resident of Vashon, is the daughter of Lisa Weir and Ed Frohning, and a graduate of Vashon High School.

Aubrey Robinson

Western Washington University student Aubrey Robinson, daughter of Timothy and Holly Robinson of Vashon, received a $1,700 Intermec Corp. Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Intermec Corp. Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management program at Western. The recipient must also demonstrate financial need and scholastic ability.

Robinson, a senior, is majoring in manufacturing and supply chain management. She is the president of the APICS (Association for Operations Management) business club.

Illes Bognar

Iowa resident Illes Fiu Bognar, born July 10, 1939, died May 24, 2008, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Swenka, of Dundee, Iowa; his sons Thomas Bognar of Vashon, William Bognar of Airway Heights, Wash., and Michael Beswick of Tacoma; his two grandchildren Elizabeth and Will Bognar; his brother Laslo Bognar; and other relatives and friends.

Bognar is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ruth and his son Jeffrey.

Bognar was born in Hungary, the son of Illes and Erzsebet Cserepi Bognar. He attended school in Hungary, graduated from high school and attended one year of college.

Bognar was a Freedom Fighter in Hungary against the Russian invasion in 1956. He fled the country to avoid imprisonment — by walking across the border from Budapest to Austria.

Bognar attended college in Sweden before moving to the United States in 1957. He became an American citizen and entered the U.S. Army in 1958. He served in Korea, and after his discharge, he continued to serve his country as a member of the Military Reserve for many years.

Bognar, then a resident of Vashon, made shoes and worked as a plastic model mold maker for K2.

Illes was married to Pat Swenka on Aug. 2, 1998, in Washington, The couple moved to the Dundee, Iowa, area in 2002.

Bognar thoroughly enjoyed driving his sport cars, caring for his cats and chickens, swimming and operating his ham radio. He was a faithful volunteer who helped others in a pleasant way and with a friendly smile, family members said.

Illes died at the age of 68 in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.

Anne Zielenbach

Anne Ross Lipe Zielenbach, 49, of Hilliard, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her loving mother Mary Dellinger Lipe. She was a member of the North Unitarian Universalist Congregation and was employed by the J. Jill Store. She is survived by loving husband of 26 years, Kurt Zielenbach; daughters Molly and Audrey Zielenbach; father Henry L. Lipe of Charleston, S.C.; brother Hank Lipe of Vashon Island, Wash.; sister Mary Gill Lipe Lasky of Charleston, S.C.; numerous relatives, a host of friends and her loving dog Bosco.

free clinic

Kids can get checked out

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the Seattle-based Nile Shrine Temple is holding a free screening clinic for children who may need free orthopedic health care.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nile Shrine Center and Golf Club in Mountlake Terrace, children up to age 18 can be screened for orthopedic conditions. Those with treatable orthopedic conditions will be referred to the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Portland.

All medical care at Shrin-ers Hospitals for Children is provided free of charge.
